Sclerotherapy (sclerotherapy) of dilated and unaesthetic veins on the arms

Protruding veins on the arms in most cases are only an aesthetic problem. As a rule, they are noticeable on the hands (especially on the middle, ring and index fingers), wrists and forearms, sometimes on the shoulders, and this phenomenon is observed more often in men than in women.

But the absence of physical discomfort does not always indicate the norm of such a symptom. If the veins in your arms protrude, this happens often, they are very visible, and even more so if they hurt, ache or pull, you should consult a doctor to find out exactly the reasons for what is happening.

Why do the veins in the arms expand?

Hands are the second most important part of the body (after the face), which is paid attention to during visual contact. At the same time, after performing a rejuvenating procedure on the face, the hands can show the real age of a person.

Dilated veins on the arms of famous artists

The most common reasons for the appearance of dilated veins in the arms are: increased stress on the arms due to the characteristics of professional work or sports and age-related changes associated with hypotrophy of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, as well as a decrease in the number of elastic fibers in the vein wall.

Is there a way to improve the appearance of your hands and remove unsightly, crooked, bulging veins on your hands? Yes, there is a way! The technique of sclerotherapy of veins in the arms in Moscow has been successfully used for a long time in our phlebology center. It is also suitable for eliminating enlarged veins and spider veins on the legs, face and other parts of the body. Hands are no exception to this technique, but its implementation has a number of subtleties, and therefore, it is performed only by highly professional phlebologists who have extensive experience working with sclerotherapy drugs.

Which doctor should I contact?

A phlebologist deals with the problems of vein diseases.
If it is not available, you can contact a vascular surgeon or general surgeon. Any of these specialists prescribes an examination and chooses the tactics for managing the patient - medications or surgery. It is necessary to evaluate its effectiveness after a course of therapy, and then observe it at least once a year upon completion of treatment. If dilated veins are accompanied only by a cosmetic defect, then treatment is carried out at the request of the patient. If there are signs of circulatory problems (swelling, heaviness) or inflammation (pain, temperature), a visit to the doctor is strictly required; such conditions can be dangerous to health and even life.

Treatment of veins of the upper extremities

Depending on the diagnosis and severity of varicose veins, the presence of phlebitis, medications, sclerotherapy, physiotherapeutic procedures, folk remedies, gymnastics and surgical treatment are used.

Drug therapy

External agents - creams and ointments with venotonic components - are applied to the affected limb with protruding veins. They include:

If swelling is severe, it is recommended to wear a compression sleeve. If only external treatment is ineffective, it is supplemented by taking medications in tablets. They increase the elasticity of the venous wall, improve venous and lymphatic outflow, and restore microcirculation. Recommended:

  • Detralex,
  • Cyclo-3-fort,
  • Phlebodia,
  • Vasocket,
  • Aescin,
  • Angionorm,
  • Antistax in capsules,
  • Ginkor Fort,
  • Aescusan.

For thrombophlebitis, anti-inflammatory drugs are indicated; for a purulent process, antibiotic therapy is necessarily prescribed. If the condition progresses, treatment is carried out in a hospital. Drugs to dissolve the blood clot and anti-clotting medications are administered. One of the alternative methods of treatment is hirudotherapy (placement of leeches).

Surgical solution to the problem

The need for surgical treatment arises in acute circulatory disorders due to blockage of a vessel (swelling, redness or bluishness of the skin), inflammation with fever, and suppuration. Most often, surgical methods are indicated for thrombophlebitis and complications after intravenous injections. For cosmetic purposes, complete removal of veins on the arms is not used.

Cosmetology procedures

You can improve the appearance of your hand using sclerotherapy and laser coagulation.

  • How to get rid of veins on the arms - treatment methods

Sclerotherapy

A substance, a sclerosant, is injected into the vessel, which hardens, and the vein is cut off from the bloodstream. After the manipulation, it is necessary to apply ointments and wear a compression sleeve for a month.

Laser coagulation

With the help of a beam of light, crimped and overly expanded areas are cauterized; they gradually become denser and become empty. The procedure gives a lasting effect if the cause of varicose veins is eliminated.

Physiotherapy

The following types of treatment are used:

Traditional methods

Herbs are used with the following effects:

  • venotonic – horse chestnut, nutmeg, rue, meadow lumbago, verbena;
  • blood thinners - golden mustache, willow leaf and bark, raspberry leaves, peony flowers, chestnut fruits, toadflax, sweet clover;
  • decongestants – horsetail grass, knotweed, elecampane root, dandelion;
  • anti-inflammatory - chestnut fruit, alder fruits, lilac flowers, bergenia leaves.

Any herbal remedies help only with the initial stage of varicose veins. Most often, a tincture is prepared from chestnut fruits. For 10 finely chopped fruits you will need half a liter of vodka. The mixture is infused in a dark place for three weeks, shaken periodically. For 30-45 days, take 25 drops dissolved in a third of a glass of water three times a day.

The tincture is also used to wipe bulging veins after morning and evening showers.

Exercises

To improve blood circulation with protruding veins in the arms, gymnastics is recommended. It should only include stretching exercises:

  1. stretch your arms forward and pull your palms as high as possible, then down;
  2. gather your fingers one at a time into a fist and open your hand in the same manner;
  3. fold your palms in a prayer gesture in front of your chest and raise your clasped hands up.

You need to stay in each position until slight fatigue appears. Upon completion, stretch with a towel (movement diagram in the photo). Throughout the day, it is recommended to make circular movements with your hands, bending your elbow joints, and circles with your arms as often as possible. If you have dilated veins, you cannot exercise in the gym with a barbell, weights, or do push-ups or pull-ups on the bar.

What methods exist for eliminating unsightly veins on the arms?

To remove veins in the arms, classical techniques can be used - phlebectomy in its cosmetic version (removal of veins through mini-punctures) or endovenous laser obliteration (suitable only for straight venous areas of large diameter). However, these techniques are quite traumatic, expensive and in some cases not very cosmetic - after the operation, bruises persist for several weeks, and scars from punctures may remain.

Sclerotherapy is a method of removing dilated veins in the arms

In contrast to these procedures, sclerotherapy is effective, safe, its implementation does not require serious financial costs, and the ability to work is not impaired during this manipulation.

Treatment tactics

Treatment of any pathology depends on the cause that provoked it. Therapeutic measures for pronounced veins can be medicinal and surgical.

The last option is resorted to in two cases: either if the disease progresses and there is a risk of a large blood clot, or if the patient simply wants to eliminate an aesthetic defect.

Cause of Vein SwellingTherapy
ThrombophlebitisAntiplatelet agents and anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory drugs, warm compresses.
Hereditary predispositionAn aesthetic problem that is inherited can only be eliminated through surgery.
Increased physical activityModerate exercise or temporary refusal of it will make the veins less noticeable.
Varicose veinsSurgical intervention or conservative treatment.

General recommendations

To enhance the effect of drug or surgical therapy, you need to help the body remove (hide) visible veins.

For this:

  • Drink enough clean, non-carbonated water. This will improve the structure of the skin of your hands, it will become smoother and more elastic.
  • Avoid coffee and alcohol. This will make the skin color uniform, without a “gray” tint.
  • Use hand creams. This can be either a simple moisturizer or a special anti-varicose cream. The latter will improve the tone of blood vessels, and, if the problem has not gone far, will hide them.

Hand exercises

There is a whole list of exercises (pictured below) that will help eliminate large veins.

Here are the most effective:

  1. Clasp your hands into fists, lower and raise them “all the way”, bending your hands – 10 times.
  2. Alternately extend your fingers to the back, then together.
  3. Gather the fingers of the right and left hands into a bun, lower them together downwards, bending the hand, return to the starting position - 10 times.
  4. Work your thumbs: pull them back and forth and to the sides.
  5. Clenching your hands into fists, twist them, bending your wrist.
  6. Forcefully bend and straighten your fingers into fists – 10 times.
  7. Place your palms together in front of your chest, bend your arms at the elbow joints, raise your elbows up, lowering your hands to your navel.
  8. Walk along any surface with your fingers, imitating playing the piano.
  9. Straighten your arms, point them in different directions, swing them in a circle - forward and backward.
  10. In the same position, bend your elbows and make circular movements of your limbs, first to the right, then to the left.

Such exercises, performed daily, can really improve the aesthetic appearance of the hands by restoring the tone of the blood vessels.

Drug therapy

Conservative treatment is aimed not only at eliminating the visible defect, but also at stopping the cause that caused it.

Basically, doctors prescribe:

A drugGroupAction
Venobene, Troxevasin, DolgitLocal applicationRelieves pain
Dipyridamole, Clopidogrel, Aspirin, CardiomagnylAntiplatelet agentsReduce the risk of blood clots, improve blood flow

How is sclerotherapy for varicose veins on the hands performed?

No special preparation is required for this procedure. The procedure itself can be performed in a treatment room (manipulation room). After treating the patient’s hands with an antiseptic solution, the phlebologist performs a puncture of the dilated vein on the arm with a needle and injects into it with a syringe a solution or foam form of a pre-prepared sclerosant (a substance that causes “sticking” and subsequent “resorption” of the target vein). The vein is punctured to administer the sclerosant using a thin needle of very small caliber, which ensures virtually no pain during the injection. After administering the drug, the hand is bandaged with an elastic bandage or a special compression glove is put on and the patient is sent home. Occlusion (“gluing”) of the vein occurs within a few days; resorption of the dilated vein usually takes several weeks.

Varicose veins of the arms in women

Factors that provoke the development of varicose veins in women:

  • Taking hormonal drugs and oral contraceptives for a long time;
  • The onset of menopause, during which an imbalance of the hormonal system occurs, affecting, among other things, the condition of blood vessels and the circulatory system as a whole;
  • The presence of congenital diseases, which result in damage to the structure of the blood vessels of the circulatory system, the valves of the veins;
  • Regular exercise in strength sports or heavy physical labor, which results in overload of the muscles of the arms and shoulder girdle as a whole.

In advanced stages of varicose veins of the hands, in addition to the aesthetic component of the unattractive appearance of the hands, the patient begins to be bothered by such phenomena as pain in the hands, fatigue and aches, numbness and loss of sensitivity.

At this stage, surgery or sclerotherapy is indicated as treatment.

The most modern and effective method of non-surgical treatment of varicose veins in women is foam sclerotherapy. In this procedure, a special substance is used as a sclerosant, which, when introduced into the lumen of the affected vessel, forms foam and more effectively stops blood flow and glues the walls of the vessel, in contrast to conventional sclerotherapy.

In addition, in our clinic this procedure is carried out under ultrasound control, which is a more accurate, effective, safe method that achieves the best treatment results.
